Certification Process

Certification Process (Consult the ACPE Certification Manual for a full description of the process)


Readiness Consultation  Readiness Consultation occurs in the candidate’s geographic area. If a candidate is anticipating a Readiness Consultation, please contact the regional certification chairperson for instructions. The fee for this committee appearance is $180. Money Orders should be made payable to “Barrett Rudd, Mid-Atlantic Region.” The Money Order must be sent to the Regional Chairperson along with a Letter of Intent.

  

Supervisory Candidate Committee – The applicant sends a written request (Letter of Intent) via certified mail for an appearance before the regional certification committee to the regional certification chair, with a copy to the ACPE Associate Director.  The fee for this committee appearance is $180.  Money Orders should be made payable to “Barrett Rudd, Mid-Atlantic Region.”  The Money Order must be sent to the Regional Chairperson along with a Letter of Intent.  If the applicant’s institution is paying the fee,  the applicant needs to submit a letter from the institution stating payment will be made, along with a Letter of Intent.  Due dates are posted on the website. Note: the Theology/Spiritual Perspective Theory Position Paper must be submitted to the Candidacy Committee for consultation.


Theory Paper Submission – Supervisory Candidates’ theory position papers must be approved by qualified ACPE readers before Candidates can request to appear for Associate Supervisor certification. The Candidate can begin writing the papers at any point in the Supervisory CPE experience. However, the papers cannot be submitted for review until Supervisory Candidate status is conferred. Note: the Theology/Spiritual Perspective Theory Position Paper must be submitted to the Candidacy Committee for consultation.  

Time line – The Candidate notifies the ACPE Associate Director in writing of intent to submit theory position papers four weeks (postmarked) prior to submission. The Candidate submits four sets of each paper and a cover letter with identifying information, daytime telephone number and address to which the evaluation should be sent to the ACPE Associate Director. (See the Certification Manual, page 20 for more information.)  The time frame from submission to receipt of feedback may be 45 days, longer during vacation and holiday times, to a maximum 60 days.


Supervisory Candidate Extension –  Supervisory Candidate status is granted for up to two years.  Applications follow same process as for Candidacy.  The fee to meet with a committee for extension of Candidate status is $180.  The fee for an Administrative extension is $45.  An Administrative Extension would be needed, for example, if a Candidate’s 2-year status expired a month before the Certification Committee appearance for Associate Supervisor.  


Associate Supervisor –  The Candidate sends a written request to the ACPE Associate Director or designee (Appendix 11, Certification Manual, page 71), with a copy to the Commission Chair, stating intent to meet the Commission. The required fee of $535 must accompany the written request to the Associate Director.


Associate Supervisor Extension –  Associate Supervisor status is granted for up to two years. Extensions may be granted by the regional certification committee, following the same process as outlined above in the Candidacy section.  The fee to meet with a committee for extension of Associate Supervisor status is $180.  The fee for an Administrative extension is $45.  An Administrative Extension would be needed, for example, if an Associate’s 2-year status expired a month before the Certification Committee appearance for ACPE Supervisor.


ACPE Supervisor –  An Associate Supervisor may choose to meet the Commission at one of its regularly scheduled national meetings, or meet a sub-committee of the Commission in one’s own region, adhering to the regional schedule.  The Associate sends a Letter of Intent (Appendix 11, p. 71) to the ACPE Associate Director or designee, with a copy to the Commission Chair, and regional certification chair if the option of meeting at the region is chosen, stating intent to meet the Commission for ACPE Supervisor certification and stating which option for meeting a committee is desired.  The required fee of $875 must accompany the written request.
