Supervisory Education

The University of Virginia Health System is accepting applications for a Supervisory Education Student in the Clinical Pastoral Education program. The ideal candidate would begin in the Fall along with the incoming resident cohort for 2015-2016. The position comes with a stipend and the supervisory student is considered a Fellow in the pastoral care department and is also a part of the larger Graduate Medical Education program at UVA (i.e. they are considered house-staff along with the medical residents and fellows). Qualified applicants will have completed at least 4 units of CPE, although a second-year residency is encouraged. Goodwin House CPE Program, Falls Church, VA. –  A 3-4 year residency position, renewed each year, beginning October 1, 2015, and will serve as a SES and chaplain at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads CCRC.  The candidate needs to have a minimum of 2-4 years of pastoral experience, be seasoned in her or his pastoral/spiritual identity and able to demonstrate pastoral competence from which he or she will teach and supervise the learning of others.  Must demonstrate an ability and willingness to use the process.  Must have a willingness to learn about a ministry of mutuality with elders, students, staff and other colleagues.  The candidate will have the opportunity to be considered for the director position when finished with training.  The Goodwin House mission “is to support, honor and uplift the lives of older adults and the people who care for them through a faith-based, nonprofit organization affiliated with the Episcopal Church.”  Our CPE program seeks to live that mission.

Summer Internships

Mary Washington Hospital, the 440 bed flagship hospital of Mary Washington Health System, offers an excellent opportunity for a Supervisory Education Student to fill an immediate opening on our campus located in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Our ideal candidate will hold a Master of Divinity degree (or equivalent).  S/he will be ordained, commissioned, or licensed, as well as endorsed by her/his faith group, and be Board Certified by the APC, NACC, or NAJC. S/he will demonstrate remarkable self-awareness, exceptional pastoral competence, and superior oral and writing ability.  S/he will have had enough CPE to demonstrate with ease the fact that s/he has met the ACPE Level II Outcomes.  In addition to meeting all the above criteria, the strongest applicants will be those who love people, pastoral care theory and practice, and who speak the language of spiritual assessment with clarity and ease.  Salary and benefits for this position (including paid annual leave, health, dental, and vision insurance, and meal while on-call) are competitive.  Applicants may submit a letter of inquiry, resume, $25 application fee, and ACPE application to the Rev. Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is accepting applications for a Supervisory Education Student (SES) until January 1, 2016.  The SES will join a  team of five supervisors and  three staff chaplains to provide pastoral education to 8 first-year and 5 second-year residents, 12 extended unit interns, and 10 full-time summer interns.  Interviews will be scheduled for January 2016.

The Supervisory Education Program.  Our Supervisory Education program is a three-year program, with a stipend, designed to ground individuals in theory, clinical practice and self-reflection in preparation for certification as an Associate Supervisor in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE).  Diverse in background, theoretical frameworks and styles of supervision, faculty promote learning and engage the supervisory student based on who the student is and what the student believes to be the essential nature of supervision in ministry.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland seeks an Episcopal or Lutheran Priest, Pastor, or lay person in the ordination process to serve as the Episcopal Chaplain and Supervisory Education Student or Clinical Pastoral Education Resident.  This is a rare opportunity to pursue ACPE Supervisory Education in the hopes that the Episcopal Chaplain will achieve Associate ACPE Supervisor status within a designated time frame.  This is a three to four year limited-term commitment.


Applicants for this position should have four units of ACPE accredited training.  Strong candidates with only three units may be considered. A Master of Divinity or equivalent degree is also required. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and commitment
